I was wondering about volume 2. This answers my question. It also gives me something else to look forward to, provided I get past volume 1. I do consider this to be a lifelong journey, as Richie points out in his intro.

I can hear and feel the swinging now. The more notes that get thrown in, the more I can here those 8th notes swinging. You are right in that I just was not sharp enough to catch it with only quarter notes. Shame on me.

Rich, have you had a surveillance camera on me? I have not been using the rhythm templates much since I have listened and danced to so many types of music that I feel almost cocky that I don’t need them. But if you recommend them, I will do my best to set aside a little time daily using them.

Also, I am guilty of coming up with noodling ideas and then losing them. I have finally started recording them and writing them down.

‘Til next time, have fun everybody.

              Hello Richie.

I have been working diligently with this portion of Module 2. My personal aim with Bebop Calisthenics is to get those sounds, and the physical ability to create them, integrated into my playing.

As I noodle around to a backing tracking, I am making sure I stick in the concepts from these tracks as a part of my improvisation. So for me, it is not just about the technical aspect of playing at speed, its even more about being able to call upon it as part of improvisation before I move on.

Do you have any thoughts on this?

You have answered my questions, and added some nice background and additional thought on “swinging.”

Thank you and enjoy your weekend.

Hopefully, you have some good, competent players to play with. 😉

                  Hmmm….

Maybe I am off base here.

To my ears, there is the traditional Blues Shuffle with that 1 AND 2, with the “1 and” being more like a triplet where only the first and last notes are played and you skip the middle triplet. There there is the Jazzy swing like Charlie Christian inspired:

When I think of Jazz Blues, I always think of swinging the note division. I was wondering how you felt about making a video in which you swing the notes and maybe talk about the feel. Maybe this will come later in the course?

Heck, maybe your videos swing and I just cannot detect it. I would love to hear your thoughts on swinging, whether it be a light swinging or “swinging hard,” as I have heard some Jazzmen enthusiastically say.

                  Thanks in advance.

Thank you. Obviously my first foray into using the script was not good since the notes I played did not seem to sound like the Mp3. I played the first exercise and compared it to the OPUS 1 mp3. I am going to go and try again. I was doing it in a rush during my short lunch break at work.

                    Have a great weekend, Richie!

I see now the errors of my ways with this poor question. I have been trying to keep my fingers assigned to certain frets in hopes that it will make navigating the first position easier. When I go from fret 3 to fret 5 with Mixo patterns 1 and 4, I stretch with the ring finger and pinky now. But with pattern 5, you teach us to use the middle finger and the pinky on frets 3 and 5 (5th string) and so on for the other strings.

Like I said, I see now that it was some faulty thinking. I need to treat each pattern separately, like I am getting into a different but similar car, just with the controls in not quite the same position.

                      OK. Got it, now.

Ha! Ha! The answer is “yes.” It is probably an outgrowth of my views on life. When I heard the title of that song, it just stuck with me. I am actually, a very positive fellow, but I feel like disaster is always right around the corner if I let my guard down – and the Hellhounds will have their way with me. So I am always trying to stay a step ahead. I know. It’s kind of silly. Happy holidays to you and yours, sir!

For anyone who reads this thread, I have been practicing that one-fret stretch at the encouragement of Mr. Zellon and I am now comfortable with it, at least at low-to-moderate speeds. Playing near the nut of the guitar, the frets are wider and that gives my pinky some issues. I broke it years ago so it is slight limited; but, practice seems to have imparted just enough of a stretch that I can execute the fingering as prescribed. Onward!

I have been careful to do everything the way you have the course laid out. After watching your videos in Module One, I see I could have gotten the answer I needed there in the videos on how to practice the fingerings. I defer to your experience and am now working on copying all fingerings exactly as you have prescribed. I have found that if I raise the neck of the guitar, and flatten out my hand, I can execute the fingering between the ring finger and the pinky with a slight jump. Maybe this thread will help future students. No further reply is needed from you, Sir.

Many thanks. I hope you are well and happy because your course has been bringing me some happiness.
