I was kind of curious as I couldn’t quite tell from the vids, and wanted to ask about Richie’s gear too, but I thought I’d do the search first, and here we are. Perhaps we can chime in with what we use. It might be interesting to find out what the other participants’ gear preferences are.

For Jazz I use three guitars: Carvin DC145 (custom shop solid-body), D’Angelico EX-DC (ES-335 type semi-hollow), Ibanez AKJ95 (hollow-body with flat wound light gauge: 11-50 strings), and two amps: Yamaha THR10C & Roland Blues Cube Artist.

On all three guitars I use the neck pickup only, keep my tone control about 3/4 way up, and make the EQ tweaking on the amps. I think it’s pretty standard approach: roll off some highs, boost the mids slightly, and back off the lows to avoid muddiness. Although there are tone differences, all three guitars work and sound great for Jazz.

That’s it Navdeep! Whatever fingering one is using under Richie’s system for a particular chord, the next chord in the sequence would require the fingering number to be increased by one, and the previous chord in the sequence would require the fingering number to be decreased by one. For example: if you use pat. 7 for the V chord, the VI chord will use pat. 1, and the IV chord will use pat. 6.

“The First Lady of Bass“ Carol Kaye is a big advocate of healthy left hand fingering technique and promotes the “Thumb Pivot Technique” for both guitar and bass. Just pretend that the thumb is on a hinge and acts as an anchor point on the back of the neck. You can pivot the hand back (toward the headstock) or forward (toward the body) and then use the appropriate finger to fret the note you need. Here’s an exercise CK (or her teacher to be exact) recommended:

I guess we would have to be a bit more organized here and explain where we’re coming from. The JGF (Jazz Guitar Forum) thread reached over 300 posts in roughly 2 months. I’m not sure how this WordPress forum plugin will handle the onslaught of posts in the long run. It looks pretty basic and does not seem to have an advanced editor. My concern is that it might eventually affect the performance of the site itself. On the other hand, if it grows big enough Richie may consider upgrading to a dedicated forum site and software.

Anyway, if we are to create a study/discussion group thread/s we should probably do it by module. Each of us is at a different point in the course and works at a different pace. So if we create separate threads for each module, one would join the thread that corresponds to the module they’re working on and perhaps help out with the previous modules. Any topics already discussed can be linked to in a particular thread.

Another thing, once our memberships expire we won’t be able to participate. A dedicated forum site with no expiration date would be welcome. Just some thoughts to consider I suppose.

NB I would prefer the username to be displayed. I hope Richie can fix that.
