A member of the Jazz Guitar Forum started a thread yesterday with a video of Pat Martino improvising (solo). The camera work allows a good look at Pat’s right hand throughout. Pat looks to be using downstrokes about 75% of the time! Barney Kessel said Charlie Christian used downstrokes about 80 % of the time.

Many players have been influenced by “Gypsy” jazz players, and others such as George Benson who seem to use a rest-stroke. Joe Pass said he always changed strings with a downstroke because it gave lines more definition.

Do players here find that using mostly downstrokes gives their arpeggios more punch than alternate-picking them?
