      Hi Richie

To avoid relying on the tab I have been skipping the “workbook arpeggio exercises”and jumping to the “Summary of bebop calisthenics“ exercises.(currently studying Vol 1, lesson 6) I find it challenging but at the same time a great way to learn. Is this acceptable, or should I be doing both?

      Thanks
      Doug

Doug, I think that’s a great idea! That’s what I have all my “one on one” students do. The tab is just a preliminary step for beginners to initially check if they are fingering the proper notes. Ultimately, you have to think “intervalically” if you want to grow as an improviser. Otherwise, you have no understanding of what you are playing.

I hope this is going under the right subject ~ my question is, is it best to always think in intervalic (script) for your improvisations or should one also think/know the note names (I.e. In F ~ 5, 2(9) 3 vs C, G, A) ? Thanks ~ Cheers Bruce
